This is Nominee Spotlights, a series in which the Best of Western Washington chats with local business owners to get the inside scoop on everything good.

Over the weekend, we caught up with Michelle Knight of Salon Swish to get the scoop on what's happening at her Tacoma salon. After working at a number of salons over the past 18 years, Michelle opened Salon Swich in February 2010 to create her own environment. The idea was that Salon Swish would be an extension of her home — a place where you walked in as a client and everyone smiles.

Describe your role at the salon My role is treat my staff as equals, as they are all leasers. I don't like to Micro manage. I think of us as a unit and so we all work together to create Swish. I maintain all that needs to be done to run the salon, yet still get to go on vacation whenever I want and my staff is capable of running it without me.

How would you describe your clientele? Hipsters, Moms, Dads, Buisness professionals. We love our clients! We have over 200 5 star reviews!

Do you have a personal favorite cut and/or color? My personal favorites are the old Vidal Sassoon cuts. Straight, perfect lines and shapes. Color would be anything solid, shiny and rich. I'm kinda a less is more kinda girl.

Is there a popular hair style or trend that all of your clients are asking for? They are all asking for the "Ombre" or Flamboyage. Its a softer look, it can be done subtle or in fashion shades.

How would you describe the salon vibe? Hippie Chic..Modern Vintage.. Laid back, fun jean wearing or super dressy. Great coffee, comfy couches wi-fi. Approachable and welcoming.

Do you host special events in the evening that your clients can attend? We all do little fashion shows, weddings, girls night's in the salon. We will help our clients by hosting jewelry, clothing or candle parties.
