This is Nominee Spotlights, a series in which the Best of Western Washington chats with local business owners to get the inside scoop on everything good.
Match Coffee and Wine was always meant to be an extension of owner Jolene Green-Chase's living room. Match opened in January 2011 in Duvall, WA and customers have been flocking from near and far to enjoy coffee and wine in the rustic cafe. Jolene took a few minutes out of her day to fill us in on the details of her wine and coffee bar.
What's the story behind the name? The name for Match Coffee & Wine came about for two reasons. First, we love how the perfect "match" of a food to a wine or to a coffee beverage can make an ordinary experience something extra memorable. The second reason is a more personal one because we met on Match.com in 2007 and talked about opening a wine bar together since our first date, which was a wine tasting event.
How would you describe your clientele? Our customers are a mixture of women and their families, but truth be told we are more of a women's bar because women can hang out by themselves or with friends without feeling uncomfortable. Many weekday nights are busy with book clubs and social gatherings wile weekends are more date nights because of our live music and comfy setting.
What is the busiest time of week? Tuesday night is busy because it is half-price bottle night. Friday night is busy because people love to hangout and listen to music while enjoying a flatbread with a glass or two of wine.
How would you describe the vibe at Match? Our vibe is relaxed and easy going. Most people tell us that we are like a living room except they don't have to wait on themselves and we do the dishes.
What's your most popular drink? Wine is our most popular drink because we are more of a wine bar than a coffee shop. Our Match Red Blend from Northwest Cellars is our best seller because it is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carmenere which gives it the spicy kick that surprises on the finish.
What about you - what do you like to drink when you're working? I actually love Chai Tea Lattes with soy milk, but I have been known to indulge in an Americano from time to time because the coffee we serve is roasted by Caffee Lusso in Redmond, who does an amazing job and is always available to answer any questions we have.
How about the food, what's popular? Our food menu is more extensive than most wine bars and coffee shops. We do flatbreads, mac 'n' cheese, bruschetta, salads, panini and grilled cheese sandwiches as well as french onion soup and desserts. All our baked goods are provided by Macrina Bakery & Cafe, Mighty O Donuts and Alki Bakery.
What is the most challenging thing about running Match? It is always a challenge to predict when you will be busy and staff accordingly. We care about our customers and endeavor to always provide excellent service, but sometimes you just get slammed and most people get it.
