This is Nominee Spotlights, a series in which the Best of Western Washington chats with local business owners to get the inside scoop on everything good.
After 17 years in the Port Orchard community, Rob Polen and his family felt a hunger to give back to the community they loved. When they started talking about how, the consensus was that a frozen yogurt shop was the answer. Enter, The Frozen One. The shop opened in July and has been a hit. In addition to satisfying the Port Orchard community's sweet tooth, each week, the Polen family chooses one cause — be it a charity, family or school group — to donate their tip jar to. Next time you're in The Frozen One, think about tipping a little extra! Here's our conversation with Rob Polen, the owner of Port Orchard's newest purveyor of frozen treats:
How did you decide to open a frozen yogurt shop? My girls like Froyo and wished there was one here in Port Orchard, we always talked about opening a small family business and thought this would be great for our community.
Which member of staff keeps things running smoothly? It's a joint effort. We have 7 family members and we all share in the responsibility.
What is the busiest time of week? We are open 7 days a week, but I would have to say the Thursday is our busiest day after all it's Double Punch Day!
Do you have any 'regular's? We have a great number of regulars too many to count. We have punch cards and special days with discounts and free yogurt.
How would you describe your clientele? It's a joy to meet different member of the community. We have many regulars and it is wonderful to get to know them. They are all very kind, down to earth and incredibly supportive. We have created so many new relationships. It is like having Family and Friends over every day. Very Port Orchard.
What is the most popular flavor these days? Any favorite toppings? Cake batter is the favorite flavor hands down, followed by vanilla and chocolate. As for favorite toppings that isa tough one since we have 120 toppings. But I would have to say anything gummi, sour and sweet. And of course no yogurt is complete without a cherry on top.
What about you - what's your favorite combo? My favorite is country vanilla, brownie bites, hot caramel, hot fudge and sliced almonds. My daughter Ashley likes pomegranate raspberry with kiwi boba, mango chunks, lemon zest sauce and almond slices. My daughter Crystal likes Cake batter with pound cake chunks, cheesecake bites, raspberries, graham cracker crumbs and marshmallow sauce.
What is the craziest thing that has happened at your store? The last day of school it was quite a sight! The shop was completely full, outside seating was full, kids were sitting in the grass and standing in the planters, the sidewalk & parking lot. You could just see them coming from all around in swarms! What made it crazy was we only had 3 people working, but it was a lot of fun!
